Mit dem schönen Titel „Scarred To Get Happy“ dokumentiert das britische Indie-Label Cherry Red Records die Entwicklung des britischen Indie-Pop von 1980 bis 1989 mit einer 5-CD Box. Diese fiel mit einem Tracklisting von 134 Songs sehr umfassend aus. Cherry Red begann als Konzertagentur, bis man 1978 als Label mit der Punkband The Tights die erste Band unter Vertrag nahm. Mit A&R Mike Alway hielt dann eine neue Leichtigkeit in der Musik Einzug, die fort vom rohen Punk hin zu künstlerischerern Songs hinführte. Everything But The Girl, The Monochrome Set, die den Gitarren Piano und Hammond-Orgeln entgegensetzten, läuteten diese Ära auf dem Label ein.

Zudem stechen bekanntere Namen wie The Jesus And Mary Chain, Primal Scream, Pulp, House Of Love, Black oder The Stone Roses aus dem Listing mitunter recht obskurer Bands heraus. Diese sind hier aber nicht unbedingt das Interessanteste an dieser Zusammenstellung, es sind tatsächlich die Funde, die man hier in diesem recht großen Fundus für sich selbst machen kann. Zum Beispiel Josef K (1979-1982), die lediglich 3 Jahre aktive Band, die Post-Punk mit dem Funk der Talking Heads verband und auch die Aufmerksamkeit des Radio-DJs John Peel auf sich ziehen konnte.

Der Nachteil an diesem beachtlichen Archiv ist, dass es nur als CD-Box erhältlich ist, diese schlägt mit knapp 55 Euro zu Buche, was für die sehr gute Auswahl für den Liebhaber zwar ein ganz ordentlicher Preis ist und die Anreize mit raren Demos etc. recht hoch sind. Dennoch würde auch eine kostengünstigere Download-Version nicht schaden.
